ABORTION
Termination of pregnancy before completion of gestation period is known as abortion. In case of abortion foetus may or may not be live.
Abortion can be infectious or not-infectious.
Reasons for infectious abortion:
- By Bacterial Infection like Brucellosis, Anthrax, Salmonellosis, Haemorrhagic Septicemia, Vibriosis etc.
- By Viral infection like FMD, Rinderpest, Infectious Bovine Rhinotrachitis etc.
- By Protozoan infection like Tricomoniasis, Trypanosomiasis, Anaplasmosis etc
Non-infectious Reasons
- Hormonal imbalance – decrease in progesterone or increase in estrogen hormone.
- Deficiency of minerals like vitamin A and any other vitamins and minerals.
- Trauma or injury on abdominal region of animal.
- Elemental poisoning.
- By the use of corticoid-steroids.
- Environmental Stress (i.e. Extreme heat, loud speaker can also cause stress to the pregnant animal)
- Feed consumed that contains estrogen hormone.
Symptoms:

Signs of abortion in goat
- Animal show parturition signs before abortion in last trimester.
- Restlessness can be seen prior to abortion.
- Bellowing is also a sign before abortion.
- Retention of Placenta can occur in case of abortion.
Treatment:
- In case of retained placenta give treatment for ROP (given in postparturient section).
- Use intrauterine medicines for three days.
- Use broad spectrum antibiotics (Section drug index)
- Use of B-complex medicines.
